the christmas cheer project

We're missing my mom this Christmas. She had more holiday cheer than anyone I ever met. 

So Mary & I decided to make some of our own and brighten some lights. 

It started with this piece we painted together one night. 

We titled it "Rudolf was here."

Mary loved the process. She helped with every piece. Trees. Branches. Snow. And we had the most fun flinging paint at the canvas to make the splat effect. It was kind of like Christmas just exploded on the canvas and, within each painting, like it spontaneously erupted upon the serene winter landscape.

After we had so much fun creating together, we decided to do a series. These are the rest of the paintings from our little project.

Imagine the photographer just being in the right place at the right time, admiring the snow, and then this guy in an orange coat just walks perfectly into frame. Snap. Front page.

I saw this on a walk in NY and it caught my eye. Kind of a different take on a cityscape. 

children's drawings brought to life

This is amazing. 

Through his project called The Monster Engine, artist Dave DeVries faithfully brings to life the doodles of his neice inspired by a simple question: What would a child's drawing look like if it were painted realistically? In Dave's own words:

"It began at the Jersey Shore in 1998, where my niece Jessica often filled my sketchbook with doodles. While I stared at them, I wondered if color, texture and shading could be applied for a 3D effect. As a painter, I made cartoons look three dimensional every day for the likes of Marvel and DC comics, so why couldn’t I apply those same techniques to a kid’s drawing? That was it… no research, no years of toil, just the curiosity of seeing Jessica’s drawings come to life."
